-------- Original Message -------- Subject: North America Tapestry Map from USGS Date: Thu, 7 Aug 2003 15:25:58 -0600 From: "Joseph J Kerski" <[log in to unmask]> ------------------ Folks: The following is one of the most beautiful and fascinating new maps I have seen in the past decade from the USGS; an excellent resource for earth science and geography instruction. Joseph Kerski ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Subject: The North America Tapestry of Time and Terrain By: Kate E. Barton, David G. Howell, Jose F. Vigil Stock #: 114767 Price: $7.00 for the map plus $5.00 handling charge A new map in the Geologic Investigations Series, I-2781, this tapestry map is the result of a collaboration among the U.S. Geological Survey, the Geological Survey of Canada, and the Mexican Consejo de Resursos Minerales. The map combines one-kilometer resolution digital elevation data with a new geologic map from the Decade of North American Geology. The scale of the large map is 1 to 8 million, using a Lambert Azimuthal Equal Area Projection. The cartographic tapestry is woven from a geologic map and a shaded relief map. This digital combination reveals the geologic history of North America through the interrelation of rock type, topography and time. Regional surface processes as well as continent-scale tectonic events are exposed in the three dimensions of space and the fourth dimension, geologic time. On the main part of the map, the ages of rock depict the geological history of the continent, by showing the varying age of the bedrock underlying North America. Inset maps show the distribution of four major rock types: sedimentary, volcanic, plutonic, and metamorphic. This map expands the original concept of the 2000 Tapestry of Time and Terrain, by Jose F. Vigil, Richard J. Pike and David G. Howell, which covered the conterminous United States.
