-------- Original Message -------- Subject: atlas definition Date: Wed, 15 Oct 2003 13:38:52 -0400 From: "nkandoian" <[log in to unmask]> ------------------ Might some Maps-L readers out there please comment on the definition of atlas (as opposed to language material) as applied by their library catalogers in the context of AACR2 and format integration and cartographic materials? Do you use some rule of thumb about percentage of maps versus text, or do you go by whether the publisher calls its work an atlas, or do you just try to judge whether the work is maps with explanatory text (an atlas) versus text with illustrative maps (not an atlas), no matter the percentage of each? NYPL catalogers and I would be grateful for some input on this. Nancy A.
