Hessler <[log in to unmask]> ------------------ Russell Guy, Filmoplast 390 is not recommmended, sactioned or even allowed by the Conservation department of the Library of Congress---all self-adhesive (i.e. pressure sensitive) tapes are potentially harmful and should not be used on paper of any type. Even pressure sensitive tapes that are called "acrhival" and sold by companies like Gaylord cause serious problems later on. All repairs to valuable maps should be done using Long-fiber repair techniqiues that employ wheat starch and specially prepared paper. Heat-set tissue should not be used on anything of value because of the iron needed to due such repairs generates a great deal of heat which reacts differently depending on the media and substrate. >>> [log in to unmask] 1/6/2004 4:57:29 PM >>> -------- Original Message -------- Subject: map repair tape replies summarized Date: Tue, 06 Jan 2004 11:42:06 -0500 From: Russell Guy <[log in to unmask]> ------------------ Hi all, Thanks for the very numerous replies about map repair tape and spray-on waterproofing. A summary of the results: Consensus was very definitely for "Filmoplast P90" self-adhesive paper tape by the German company Neschen. 3/4" x 164" roll sells for about $20. Gaylord had a selection of cloth tape with either self-stick or water-soluble adhesive. A third option was Archbond heat-set tissue by a British firm. For spray waterproofing, the consensus seemed to be Map Seal: http://www.aquaseal.com/map-seal.html Again, thanks for all the replies.
