Thus these datasets listed below are not public domain and should not be copied in mass. -------------------- ORNL, for their 2001 population dataset, decided not to grant permission to redistribute their products. Users can still get them freely but it must come from directly from them. For the 2000 population dataset, which is only on the DVD volume (to be released), we have permission to redistribute it. As for the regions CDROM volumes this uses the 1998 population data and we were also given permission to distribute this. Given there new policy for the 2001 data, you might not want to place the population data for the public to use outside the Global GIS CDs, but give them the link for them to download the latest data. ORNL: http://www.ornl.gov/gist/landscan/ (2001 policy is also here) On the Global GIS website: http://webgis.wr.usgs.gov/globalgis/landscan/landscan.htm example path to data on CDs: data\database\mapbase\l_images\landscan\pop\na_pop.tif Note that these files are just color images based on the real data. Only the DVD had room to place the actually data on there. The population values are actually held in a course point file (image_pt.shp). -------------------- Another dataset that required special permission is the UNESCO geologic age. These cannot be redistributed without permission. As far as I know, some of these maps are not available digitally elsewhere. See the permission statements from UNESCO. On the Global GIS website: http://webgis.wr.usgs.gov/globalgis/metadata_qr/geo_age_qk_ref.htm (looks like the top one's format is a little screwy). UNESCO: http://www.unesco.org/ The USGS Energy group has final versions that can be downloaded too. Some of the Global GIS files are from thier files but some were roughly digitized by us. Thus their versions, if different, would be preferable. http://energy.cr.usgs.gov/oilgas/wep/index.htm -------------------- Some of the data on the last 4 volumes and DVD need direct permission from ESRI. This would include: World Administrative Units 2002 (files: admin02.*) http://webgis.wr.usgs.gov/globalgis/metadata_qr/metadata/ESRI_admin02.htm World Cities (files: esri_cities.*) http://webgis.wr.usgs.gov/globalgis/metadata_qr/metadata/ESRI_cities.htm On the US CD and DVD only: U.S. Counties (Generalized) (files: counties.*) no web link yet - should be on the North America CD. Faults (files: faults.*) http://webgis.wr.usgs.gov/globalgis/metadata_qr/metadata/ESRI_faults.htm ESRI Gazetteer: (DVD Only - files: esri_gaz*.*) no weblink yet - should be on the Global DVD. -------------------- The ESRI software ArcView Data Publisher cannot be redistributed either (it wouldn't work very well without all the data there anyway). --------------------
