-------- Original Message -------- Subject: RE: scanning encapsulated maps] Date: Thu, 29 Apr 2004 16:36:09 -0400 From: Grevin, Frederic <[log in to unmask]> ------------------ Travis, in the course of testing and evaluating wide-format copiers (which today are essentially scanners with an attached printer), we found that the two Xerox models we tested were "fooled" into making an incorrect exposure by the reflectivity of the Mylar encapsulation. Overcoming this problem required turning off all of the automatic-exposure and automatic-correction features, which is unacceptable to us for reasons of productivity. The Océ model and the Ricoh model we tested were not fooled by the Mylar encapsulation. We noticed no significant problems with resolution or dimensional stability from the Mylar encapsulation. HOWEVER, the majority of our drawings are engineering and architectural rather than cartographic, and small differences in resolution or dimensional stability are somewhat less significant in those fields. Best regards, Fred. ========================= Frederic J. However, at some point I would like to scan a number of these maps. Is it possible to scan encapsulated maps, will it hurt the scan quality? Any help that people can provide would be appreciated.
