They are given their own monographic bib. records and are shelved in a filing cabinet by LC call number. Take a look at our records in our online catalog. Just do an author search for National Geographic. TESC Library Catalog http://www.evergreen.edu/library/catalog/librarycatalog.htm There will always be some sort of amount of theft with any title in a library...not only theft but also damage due to normal usage. One of my former student workers donated to our library collection, the National Geographic maps on CD-ROM which has from the very beginning to 2000 or 2001 I think. We've used it a couple of times to help us find some information for a patorn. Serves as a good backup. Carlos A. Bertuca <[log in to unmask]> To: Maps List <[log in to unmask]> ------------------ greetings in the map libraries; We are considering the pros and cons of separating our NG supplement maps from the bound volumes in order to conserve them, protect them, and to catalog them for better access. My questions are: 1. how have other collections handled this (separate or leave in issues) 2. For libraries that keep the maps with the bound volumes--how much theft or missing maps have you discovered? We want to catalog each map with the appropriate cross-links to the issues and also from the magazine to the maps so that access will be maintained for anyone needing to put the map and the articles together for study. Thank you all. David J. Bertuca, Map Librarian University at Buffalo Map Collection [log in to unmask]
