This was in Sunday's paper: Hal Shelton of Golden, Age 88, died November 2, 2004. Survived by his Wife, Mary; four sons, nine grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Memorial Celebration to be announced. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be mad to Hal and Mary Shelton Elementary School, 420 Crawford St., Golden, CO 80401 to benefit the Hal Shelton Memorial Arts Fund. I am certain a longer article will appear in the paper soon, and I will forward that on to everyone. Hal Shelton was one the premier cartographers of the 20th Century. He worked for USGS and was the head of cartoraphy at Jeppeson & Company. He believed in making realistic maps--he hated gradient tints (e.g. Death Valley in green because it was below sea level). One of his more famous works is the Colorado Ski Map--a view of Colorado that shows all the Colorado Ski areas. I got to know Hal and Mary in 1999. I hosted a WAML meeting here and someone suggested that I should ask Hal to speak. He quickly accepted. I enjoyed my many visits with him. He always had interesting stories about his work, and travels. He was an incredible painter. His artist studio was something to behold. I was so taken with his work, I bought a painting of his and it hangs proudly on my living room wall. more to come, --cjjt --Christopher JJ Thiry Map Librarian Colorado School of Mines 1400 Illinois PO Box 4029 Golden, CO 80401-0029 voice: 303-273-3697 fax: 303-273-3199 [log in to unmask] http://www.mines.edu/library/maproom/ http://www.mines.edu/fs_home/cthiry/
