He said Steve Duenes had contacted him to help advertise the position and the announcement should be shared as deemed appropriate. Sounds like a challenging but interesting job. Helen HelenJane Armstrong PhD Head, Map & Imagery Library George Smathers Libraries University of Florida PO Box 117011 Gainesville, FL 7011 -----Original Message----- The New York Times is looking for extremely versatile cartographers who thrive on the news and can respond on deadline with innovative, compelling maps. All aspects of cartography are essential to our visual coverage, and ideal candidates should have a wide-ranging skill set, including proficiency with shaded-relief maps and GIS-generated thematic maps. The news knows few boundaries and in the past three years we have tried to develop imaginative ways to tell news stories through maps. The day after September 11th, we ran vector maps showing a building-level analysis of destruction in Lower Manhattan. When the U.S. invaded Afghanistan, we ran an aerial view of the topography of the Hindu Kush. When the U.S. invaded Iraq, we draped satellite imagery beneath linework indicating troop movements. And as part of our recent election coverage, we produced maps showing specific amounts donated to Presidential candidates from individual addresses in New York City, Los Angeles and Washington D.C. The job description is broad but simple. Produce maps that clearly describe the biggest current events. It's a powerful platform and a great opportunity for cartographers with a strong journalistic impulse. Contact: Steve Duenes [log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]>
