Edith,

We have run across this matter here at PSU a couple of times in our
cataloging practice. I know we contacted the LC Geography and Map
Division staff for help with this, and I will recommend that you contact
Richard Fox at [log in to unmask] for the best possible advice.

In terms of how to describe the map, I think you would go forward
describing what you have in hand "as is". Turn to the LC Map Cataloging
Manual for guidance on how to classify a place that no longer exists,
there is a piece called "Formerly Independent Towns" on page 1.3 of
chapter 1, Classification that will help with this. As far as subject
headings, thats where I'd have to do some digging and I think Richard
can give you advice more quickly than I can.
