Edith,
We have run across this matter here at PSU a couple of times in our cataloging
practice. I know we contacted the LC Geography and Map Division staff for
help with this, and I will recommend that you contact Richard Fox at [log in to unmask]
for the best possible advice.
In terms of how to describe the map, I think you would go forward describing
what you have in hand "as is". Turn to the LC Map Cataloging Manual for guidance
on how to classify a place that no longer exists, there is a piece called
"Formerly Independent Towns" on page 1.3 of chapter 1, Classification that
will help with this. As far as subject headings, thats where I'd have to
do some digging and I think Richard can give you advice more quickly than
I can.

Subject: e cataloging extinct townships
Mappers,
I have a map of a township that was since incorporated into a city. In
Ohio, townships exists as ways to collect income for services such as fire,
police, school districts. Does anyone know the rule or procedure to catalog
an area that no longer exists??
Thanks,
Edith
