We compile lists of what we want to discard, sent them out to the depositories around the state first before we can send the list to the National Needs & Offers List. You have to retain the offers for three months in order to give depositories a chance to see if they need them or not. Once the deadline is up, you can now get rid of them. Most of the time, they go to recycling bins and yet, others have a free bin that patrons can pick and choose from. Carlos A. It's actually mostly a map give-away, but we do charge for some. We advertise where students and faculty can see it, as well as in the local newspaper. We never get rid of all the surplus maps, but the event makes a huge dent in the pile. While we are on the subject, what does everyone else do with paper maps that are no longer needed and cannot be circulated elsewhere? We, in the UK, hate to just bin them but there seems to be little choice left.
