================================================ MAPS-L ** MAPS-L ** MAPS-L ** MAPS-L ** MAPS-L ================================================ Subject: Re: MAPS-L: Outsourcing retrospective cataloging Date: Wed, 13 Jul 2005 From: Paige Andrew <[log in to unmask]> To: "Maps, Air Photo & Geospatial Systems Forum" <[log in to unmask]> References: <[log in to unmask]> Rebecca, This topic has been raised in the past on MAPS-L, so perhaps one thing you can do is get into the index to see what has been shared in the past on outsourcing of retrospective map cataloging. In addition, I have personal experience using OCLC's Retrocon unit to do a couple of small projects for us here at PSU (and set things up so that something similar was done at the Univ. of Georgia shortly after I left there a few years back). Basically, unless one is able to locate somebody locally who can do such work on their own, OCLC is about the only outfit that can tackle doing retrospective cataloging of maps, and they do a good job too! There was, for several years, a person in either Maryland or Virginia who had a company that she ran out of her home but I understand she gave that up some time ago. A good article to read on this topic, though not the only one out there, is "Retrospective Conversion and Cataloging of a Major Academic Map Collection: The University of Washington Story" by Kathryn Womble, published in Vol. 27, No. 3/4 of Cataloging & Classification Quarterly and republished in the companion monograph titled "Maps and Related Cartographic Materials: Cataloging, Classification, and Bibliographic Control." Ms. Womble added a good Reference citation list at the end so you can pursue older related articles from there. Good luck, and do share your findings!
