Date: Thu, 15 Sep 2005 From: Maura O'Connor <[log in to unmask]> To: Maps, Air Photo & Geospatial Systems Forum <[log in to unmask]> Dear Frank This is an international problem, which map publishers all over the world have been doing for upwards of a century! I can provide dozen of Australian examples where they do the same thing. Most will have a code, usually either above the left or right hand corner of the lower neat line and you learn to read that! Have fun! Date: Wed, 14 Sep 2005 From: Frank Stieber <[log in to unmask]> To: [log in to unmask] To all involved in the indexing and cataloging of maps, I recently came across a publisher, Universal Maps, that deliberately leaves off the dates on their most recently published street maps for reasons stated below. I raised an eyebrow at this when querying the publisher on the dates of some of its maps because I think street maps are one of those products that a consumer would definitely want to know the year published what with roads and highways changing so frequently in fast growing American Cities and suburbs. In any case they claim they leave the dates off so the public doesn't assume their products are outdated if the year published isn't up to date on a particular map. I think I would encourage the public to purchase maps from a company that is forthright in revealing when the map was published, so as to know the information is valid and relevant for navigation. ~frank Stieber ASU - Map Collection -----Original Message----- From: [log in to unmask] [mailto:[log in to unmask]] Sent: Wednesday, September 14, 2005 6:36 AM To: Frank Stieber Subject: Fw: Universal Map Dates????? Mr. Stieber, I'm not sure which editions of these titles you have. In order to know this, I would need you to send me the ISBN numbers on them. What would also help greatly is the number in the upper right hand corner of the barcode boxes where the ISBN is. It should be either a number beginning with two letters (ex: TX555) or a seven digit number. We generally don't put dates on our maps because if people see that a map was last updated in say, 2003, even if it is the most updated possible version, they will still think it is outdated. We try to always stock our most current edition of all products, but people will still assume that it is old. Thanks!
