Click on "Bruce Katz Illustrates Levee Breach." http://www.2theadvocate.com/wbrz/video_index.shtml Although some of the networks are using GoogleEarth, one network had a terrible map that erroneously showed New Orleans west of Lake Ponchartrain The area is also depicted on the Spanish Fort and New Orleans East USGS 7.5-minute Quads. The "17th Street Canal" is on the west edge of the sheets but it is labeled "Metarie Outflow Canal." The larger canal to east that also has a breach is the Industrial Canal. Notice the contour line near the north end of the Metarie Outflow Canal. Its elevation is -5 feet. The Superdome sits between the +5 foot and 00 contours. Here is a site for GIS files for Louisiana for your patrons needing shape files: http://www.atlas.lsu.edu It also has DRG and DOQQs for downloading. The LSU Cartographic Information Center sustained no damage although there were hurricane force gusts, and possible sustained, winds here in Baton Rouge. This is amazing since we in an 80-year old building with 8-foot high wood frame windows on three sides surrounded by equally old Live Oak trees. The LSU community is helping with relief efforts with the state and federal agencies and several universities in New Orleans are relocating their administrative offices to campus. The LSU Field House and Pete Maravich Assembly Center are being used for special medical needs evacuees and medical triage respectively. John John M.
