I just love these locally produced maps. http://www.santacruzsentinel.com/archive/2005/September/06/style/stories/01style.htm Map quest PAT ARNOLD always seemed to know where she was going — which might not be unusual considering that Pat has been a map publisher for years. And Sept. 18, Pat will celebrate her 80th birthday as a way to celebrate and attract new members for one of her favorite causes, the United Nations Association of Santa Cruz. Pat will host a brunch in her garden that is free to members of UNA. Anyone who is not a member is invited to join for $25 a year for a family. Pat, an activist and author, is also marking her map-publishing partnership with her grandson, TOBY THIERMANN. Pat learned cartography and the publishing business from her father, who started a chain of maps on the East Coast in 1932. So it’s only fitting her business publishing maps for Santa Cruz and Monterey counties will now include her grandson. Toby recently graduated from UC San Diego and has been running the company Web site, california-maps.com, for a number of years. Now he is a full-time junior partner. He is also working with his dad, ERIC THIERMANN, on some video projects. Pat’s birthday party also will be a family affair with music provided by her daughter, singer LINDA ARNOLD, and granddaughter, ARIEL THIERMANN. They will perform material from the upcoming mother-daughter CD. Besides map publishing, Pat is a prolific writer with three autobiographical books and two mysteries to her name. She also has written newsletters for the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom and the UNA. She is a devoted duplicate bridge player. If you want more information about the birthday brunch, at 181 Branciforte Ridge (located in the 5400 block of Branciforte Drive), you can call Pat at 425-7618. ************************************************************** http://california-maps.com/ Blue Maps The Blue Pocket Maps are a four generation family business conceived in 1932 by Pat Arnold’s father, Robert Clay Monroe, an artistic cartographer, and first published a large number of maps in Westchester County. The family moved to California in 1959 and produced ten maps for the San Fernando Valley and Santa Barbara County, expanding to Santa Cruz County in 1972. Pat and Chuck Arnold, working with their daughter, Linda, gradually enlarged the map chain to nineteen maps covering the Santa Cruz, Monterey and Silicon Valley. In 1998, the Arnolds sold seven of the Santa Clara chain to Q Advertizing in San Jose after developing a website California-maps.com Pat Arnold, along with her grandson, Toby Thiermann, who has enhanced the website to include bluemaps.com, now publish yearly in Aptos, Capitola-Soquel, Carmel, Carmel Valley, Felton-Scotts Valley, Monterey, Pacific Grove, Santa Cruz and Watsonville (published every two years). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ANGIE COPE American Geographical Society Library 2311 E.
