Dang Hung Vo, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, highlighted the significance of the conference, and said the event helped in exchanging information on technology developments and contributed to sustainable regional development. If information technology (IT) helps people get closer, spatial technology and remote sensing technology would help people understand the earth better, he added. According to statistics, Viet Nam’s demand for remote sensing pictures for the economy was very high at millions of US dollars. Prime Minister Phan Van Khai recently signed a decision to invest in a project for launching the Vinasat communication satellite, covering ASEAN, Japan, the Korean Peninsula, part of China and the eastern Australian continent. Two satellite control stations would also be built in Ha Tay Province’s Hoai Duc District and Binh Duong Province’s Ben Cat District for facilitating Vinasat’s operations, he added. According to Shunji Murai, General Secretary of the Asian Association of Remote Sensing (AARS), the conference gave an opportunity to exchange opinions and ideas for promoting the growth of remote sensing in Asia. He praised Viet Nam for organising the conference, and said the country had been one of the most active participants at the ACRS. The 26th ACRS, which will close on November 11, was jointly organised by the AARS, the Viet Nam Association of Geodesy, Cartography and Remote Sensing and the Association of Vietnamese Geographers. Along with the 26th ACRS, a four-day Asian Space Conference will open in Ha Noi on November 11. — VNS .:*~*:._.:*~*:._.:*~*:._.:*~*:._.:*~*:._.:*~*:._.:*~*:._.:*~*:._ ANGIE COPE American Geographical Society Library UW Milwaukee 2311 E.
