-------- Original Message -------- Subject: New USGS Geologic Map of the San Francisco Bay region Date: Thu, 20 Apr 2006 16:28:45 -0600 From: Joseph J Kerski <[log in to unmask]> To: [log in to unmask] Number: 06-07 Geologic Map of the San Francisco Bay Region Date: April 20, 2006 Stock # 206043 (Scientific Investigations Map 2918) Price: $7.00 for the map, plus $5.00 handling The San Francisco Bay region is home to 7 million people whose lives are intertwined with some of the most complex and active geology in the world. With heightened public awareness about earthquake hazards on the 100th anniversary of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the California Geological Survey, has produced a geologic map of the San Francisco Bay Area designed to provide a new look at the geologic history of the region. Geologic maps are made by carefully studying the location, age, and identity of geologic materials in a region, as well as the orientation and position of geologic structures. This information is compiled in a Geographic Information System (GIS) that combines a digital map and a database. The data is then interpreted to "fill in" areas where the geologic materials and structures are not visible (covered by dense vegetation or thick soil, for example). To learn more about this map visit: http://sfgeo.wr.usgs.gov. Included on this site is an on-line version of the geologic map that can be downloaded, along with photos, additional information and sites related to the geologic history in 15 locations around the region. This map measures approximately 36x48 inches and is available from USGS Science Information and Library Services (SILS). To place an order, call the SILS offices at 1-888-ASK-USGS, or visit: http://www.usgs.gov.
