-------- Original Message -------- Subject: map drawer capacity Date: Wed, 06 Sep 2006 17:18:06 -0400 From: Michael Fry <[log in to unmask]> Organization: University of Maryland Libraries To: Maps and Air Photo Systems Forum <[log in to unmask]> Hi all, I have a large collection of maps coming my way (~32,000), and I need to figure out if I have space to shelve them properly. I've seen the literature that suggests limiting drawers to 200-250 maps, but it's not clear to me if drawer capacity can actually vary with the size (and thus weight) of the maps. For example, if 200 sheets is the max suggested drawer capacity for full-sized maps, doesn't it follow that 400 half-sized sheets (or 800 quarter-sized sheets) would also be acceptable? After all, the overall weight would be roughly similar in each scenario, and the height of each stack (and hence the ease of shelving and reshelving) would also be the roughly the same. Or am I nuts? Thanks for any help you can provide. mf -- Michael Fry Maps Librarian Government Documents & Maps University of Maryland 301.314.1357 | [log in to unmask]
