-------- Original Message -------- Subject: Archiving geospatial datasets Date: Wed, 06 Sep 2006 10:33:26 -0700 From: Mary Larsgaard <[log in to unmask]> Reply-To: [log in to unmask] Organization: UCSB Map & Imagery Lab, Library To: Maps and Air Photo Systems Forum <[log in to unmask]> Glad you asked the questions, Dawn:-) The work being done for the NDIIPP contract that the University of California, Santa Barbara, and Stanford map libraries are involved with - National Geospatial Digital Archive, http://www.ngda.org - has made us deal with these questions and come up with what we find to be reasonable answers, or at least reasonable places from which to start our efforts. A key part of this work has been a collection development policy (cdp) for collections of geospatial data in digital form: http://www.ngda.org/reports/NGDA%20Reports/CDP_Draft.doc The "we" writing this cdp are Julie Sweetkind-Singer, Tracey Erwin, and me, Mary Larsgaard. The goal of NGDA is geospatial datasets of the United States; the general policies in the cdp may be extrapolated to datasets of other geographic area. The most important point to start with is that the datasets collected must be of geographic areas/thematic content that the map library would normally collect in hard copy. As we progress on this - the end of the 2d year of this 3-year contract is the end of September - we'll be reporting back to you. THANK YOU in advance for your input I look forward to learining from you. If you would like to respond offline, I could aggregate/ summarize responses for the list.
