Position: Catalog Librarian for Maps Catalog Department Yale University Library Rank: Librarian II-IV THE UNIVERSITY AND THE LIBRARY The University Library, which is a highly valued partner in teaching and research at the University, has more than 12.5 million volumes housed in the Sterling Memorial Library and 21 school and departmental libraries. It employs a dynamic and innovative staff of nearly 600 FTE who have the opportunity to work with the highest caliber of faculty and students, participate on committees and are involved in other areas of staff development. A full spectrum of library resources, from rare books and manuscripts to a rapidly expanding network of electronic resources, constitutes one of Yale's distinctive strengths. The Library is engaged in numerous digital initiatives designed to provide access to a full array of scholarly information. Yale is a member of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging and contributes to the NACO and BIBCO Programs. The Yale Map Collection The Yale Map collection, housed in Sterling Memorial Library, is one of the country's outstanding collections, holding more than 200,000 sheet maps and 3,000 atlases, including 11,000 rare maps. While its coverage is international, the Collection has extraordinary strengths in maps of North America, particularly the area that is not the United States. The Collection's interests are both historical and contemporary, print and non-print, with an established program to enhance its growth and access through effective acquisitions, cataloging, preservation, security, and user services. RESPONSIBILITIES Under the general direction of the History and Social Science Team Leader, and working closely with the Curator of the Map Collection, provides original cataloging for a wide range of print and manuscript maps, with an emphasis on rare maps. Descriptive cataloging is performed in accordance with national standards and the requirements of Yale's local on-line Voyager system. Other responsibilities include keeping abreast of revisions in cataloging rules and trends, training and revising the work of other librarians and catalog assistants, and resolving cataloging problems for support staff. Librarians participate actively in the Library's management, assessment, training, and development programs, contribute to implementing the mission of the Library, and keep active professionally. QUALIFICATIONS Master's Degree from an ALA-accredited library science program and two years professional cataloging experience and professional accomplishments. Strong reading knowledge of one or more European languages. Subject background in history, geography, cartography or geosciences. Sound knowledge of AACR2, Library of Congress rule interpretations, Library of Congress subject analysis, the Library of Congress Map Cataloging Manual, and MARC formats for books and maps. Working familiarity with OCLC and/or RLIN. Experience cataloging in an integrated library system. Experience with either modern or rare maps and a familiarity with metadata schemes for geospatial data and cartographic materials are preferred. Knowledge of current trends and best practices in GIS services is desirable. Strong analytical, problem solving, and academic research skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Proficient computer skills, including experience with Windows, Mac, or other computer platform hardware and software as needed to perform library functions. Excellent organizational skills, accuracy, and attention to detail. Demonstrated ability to work well independently and with others in a rapidly changing and demanding environment. Appointment at the Librarian III level requires a minimum of five years relevant professional library experience in areas of cataloging and processing cartographic material as well as professional accomplishments. Appointment at Librarian IV requires eight years relevant professional library experience in areas of cataloging and processing cartographic material as well as exceptional professional accomplishments.
