-------- Original Message -------- Subject: Looking for map/paper conservator Date: Thu, 12 Oct 2006 09:16:22 -0700 From: Kirk Fullmer <[log in to unmask]> Reply-To: <[log in to unmask]> Hi Liz, I am the local map rep/owner in the Northwest, which I also specialize in remounting maps and repair. You can view my website; www.mymapman.com <http://www.mymapman.com/> and click on the “Map Hardware” section. There we do roller mountings and we can repair the hanging rods. I would need to discuss with you about the maps and find out more information of the condition. You may need to ship them to me or I can make arrangements to come and visit to view them. If you are located in Portland, that is not a problem since I am in the Seattle area. Hopefully we can discuss the maps and see what I can do to help you. Thank you, Kirk Fullmer Educational Maps & Globes, LLC Kenmore, WA 98028 888-310-7898 www.mymapman.com <http://www.mymapman.com> To all, I have a good friend that has a 1852 wall map (Jacob Monk, United States and Central America), mounted on rods, that is in need of some restoration. She is very interested in finding someone to stabilize this map, including but not limited to reattaching the lower rod which has come loose. I've seen it, and it is laminated and apparently NOT mounted on linen (only paper), and the lamination state is poor -- cracked, et al. She had someone look at it in the 1970s about remounting it (a local framer, I don't know his qualms on restoration) and he said it was "too fragile to mount on backing". One note: this is not the only map she has that is worth conserving (some more worthy of attention than this one), so there could be more activity in the future. The client is in Portland, Oregon; West Coast (Oregon and Washington preferred.) Would you recommend anyone to contact for advice or assistance? Thanks for all your suggestions. I'll be happy to collect your suggestions and repost them to the list. Liz Paulus Map Librarian at Large Portland, Oregon lgp at well dot com
