New and improved JNP map being created by Kevin Gill Wednesday November 01, 2006 Mike Mitchell and Mike Day have both lived in town since the ’80s and have hiked many a kilometre in Jasper National Park. The pair also worked together at the Parks Canada trails office in the late ’90s, signing out a lot of locals and visitors to various hiking and backcountry trips. It was during their time at the trails office that Mitchell and Day came up with the idea to create a new map of the park. “That’s where we both realized the love of maps and interest in that field,” said Day. Flash forward about eight years and that project is on the verge of being finished, and who better than two men so familiar with the park to take on the task? The locals, who together formed a company called True North Cartographics in 2004, have created the new map, in accordance with the JNP centennial, which takes place next year. The map will be the first full one of the park created since 1985, when the federal government made its own one of JNP (the same year that Parks Canada celebrated its 100-year anniversary). for the whole article go here: http://www.jasperbooster.com/Headline%20News/263101.html
