Guy Moore and Geoff Sammon. I ordered it this Fall but we haven't received our copy yet. There are 3 volumes and I believe one of the volumes consists entirely of antique maps from the Arab World. There was a great write-up about it in _Nature_ this June (Nature 441, 696-697 (8 June 2006)) called "Charting an Arabic course" which prompted me to spend the money on the set. Here is a link to the article if you are interested http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v441/n7094/full/441696a.html It sounds like just the thing to fill the hole in your patron's research. Also, if anyone knows more about this set or has it in hand please feel free to correct me because I am just going by the very little I know not having seen the set myself. On a side note, this is my first time providing reference help on Maps-L as a brand new Map Librarian so bear with me if I sound kind of like a newbie! :o) Carol McAuliffe, Map Librarian Map and Imagery Library, Spatial Information Services Unit Government Documents Department George A. Date: Thu, 14 Dec 2006 16:47:10 -0700 From: Ken Rockwell <[log in to unmask]> To: Maps, Air Photo & Geospatial Systems Forum <[log in to unmask]> Hello, all: I have a patron who is interested in the longstanding debate in the Middle East as to what to call the gulf between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula; you're probably familiar with it. He'd like to find examples of early maps (including non-Western) that portray and name the water body. I haven't found any non-Western maps in my historical atlases, nor at David Rumsey's site. Does anyone know of any good examples, esp. Middle-East produced? The earlier the better... Thanks... --Ken Rockwell Univ. of Utah
