-------- Original Message -------- Subject: Draft North American Profile of ISO Standard being Reviewed Date: Thu, 8 Feb 2007 11:44:20 -0500 From: Zellmer, Linda R <[log in to unmask]> To: Maps, Air Photo & Geospatial Systems Forum <[log in to unmask]>, <[log in to unmask]> Hello All, The FGDC Metadata Work Group has developed a North American Profile of the ISO Geospatial Metadata Standard 19115:2003. The draft of the profile is now available for review and comment. The announcement of the review, with links to the document, is given below. The North American Profile was developed jointly by organizations in the U.S. and Canada. Canadians are being invited to participate in the review through the Canadian General Standards Board (_http://w3.pwgsc.gc.ca/cgsb/prgsrv/stdsdev/nsa/secthree-e.html_). The information below contains a link to the profile as well as instructions on how to comment on the profile for participants in the United States. The comment period ends March 16. Linda Zellmer ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The InterNational Committee for Information Technology Standards (INCITS) Technical Committee L1, Geographic Information Systems and the Canadian General Standards Board – Committee on Geomatics (CGSB-CoG) have released a draft of the North American Profile of International Standards Organization Standard 19115: 2003, Geographic information - Metadata (NAP – Metadata) for review. Review and comment from other metadata practitioners are also invited. Comments are invited to assure that the Profile meets the needs of the geographic information community in both the United States and Canada. The review period began on February 1, 2007 and ends March 16, 2007. The draft profile may be found at _http://www.fgdc.gov/standards/projects/incits-l1-standards-projects/NAP-Metadata/napMetadataProfileV101.pdf/_ <_http://www.fgdc.gov/standards/projects/incits-l1-standards-projects/NAP-Metadata/napMetadataProfileV101.pdf/_> . Reviewers are encouraged to complete the comment form (Word, Excel) using the instructions provided in FGDC Standards Directive #2d, Standards Working Group Review Guidelines: Review Comment Template. The ISO Standard ISO 19115:2003 can be purchased from the ANSI eStandards Store. Comments received will be reviewed in mid-March. Editing will be finished by end of April. After the draft standard passes the INCITS L1 and the CGSB-CoG ballot, it will be submitted to the INCITS Secretariat and the CGSB for further processing, which includes a public review, for approval. The Standard will then be published as an American National Standard (ANS) and a Canadian National Standard simultaneously. The ANS will be known as the U.S. National Profile of ISO 19115:2003, Geographic information – Metadata. Following publication as an ANS, the U.S. National Profile will replace the current Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (Version 2.0), FGDC-STD-001-1998. INCITS L1 and the CGSB-CoG developed parallel standards through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between ANSI and Standards Council of Canada (SCC). The CGSB is a federal government organization accredited by the SCC that offers client-centered, comprehensive standards development and conformity assessment services in support of the economic, regulatory, procurement, health, safety and environmental interests of Canadian stakeholders — government, industry and consumers. The CGSB-CoG is the technical committee responsible for the development and maintenance of unique National Standards in the area of geomatics. SCC will approve the North American Profile of ISO 19115:2003 and CGSB will publish it as the Canadian profile of ISO 19115:2003. The content of the U.S. and Canadian versions will be identical. The American National Standard Institute (ANSI) has accredited the procedures of the InterNational Committee for Information Technology Standards (INCITS) to develop voluntary consensus standards for Information and Communications Technologies (ICT). The U.S. participates in ANSI and ISO standardization activities for geographic information through INCITS Technical Committee L1. OMB Circular A-119 directs Federal agencies to participate in voluntary consensus standards bodies such as INCITS L1. To that end, the FGDC and member agencies have joined INCITS L1 as members. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Linda Zellmer Head, Geology Library Geology Building, Room 601 1001 E. 10th Street Bloomington, Indiana 47405-1405 Phone: (812) 855-2275 Fax: (812) 855-6614 [log in to unmask]
