This map provides the first detailed, systematic survey of the southern portion of the lake. The data was collected to better define the physical characteristics of the lake, provide data for improved calculations of area and volume, and provide lake bottom contour information that could be used in future efforts to develop a general circulation model of the lake. Prior to the 1980’s detailed information about many aspects of the Great Salt Lake, including bathymetric data was scarce. Flooding in the early 1980’s increased concern for the lake’s ecosystem. Avian resources and the emergence of the brine shrimp industry created both public interest and management concern. To fill the need for a better understanding of the physical and chemical characteristics of the lake, how the lake functions, and how man is affecting these characteristics and functions, bathymetric data was collected for the south part of the Great Salt Lake during 2002-04 using a single-beam, high-definition fathometer and real-time differential global positioning system were used. Efforts are underway to use this new data for lake circulation modeling, chemical transport, and to better define the relationship between lake bathymetry and its biological and ecological components.
