I'm forwarding this email from lis-maps - just to bring attention to the MARC discussion paper related to cataloging map series. Not sure if this was brought to the lists attention back in 2006 - so here it is ... -a- MARC Discussion Paper No. 2006-DP07, Recording set information for multipart cartographic materials/, available at the Library of Congress website : http://www.loc.gov/marc/marbi/2006/2006-dp07.html -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Re: Map cataloguing - series Date: Fri, 1 Jun 2007 16:17:32 +0100 From: Huw Thomas <[log in to unmask]> Reply-To: A forum for issues related to map & spatial data librarianship <[log in to unmask]> Organization: Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru / National Library of Wales To: [log in to unmask] Bernie, This is an issue which has undergone much discussion, I would particularly refer you to /MARC Discussion Paper No. 2006-DP07, Recording set information for multipart cartographic materials/, available at the Library of Congress website : http://www.loc.gov/marc/marbi/2006/2006-dp07.html Here at NLW we individually catalogue OS Landranger & Explorer sheets & also OSI, OSNI & BGS maps at similar scales. Other Libraries only create series entries and control sheet access via graphic indexes or handlists - we do this for overseas maps and large scale plans. I am not aware of anybody who actually lists the details of every sheet of such a series on a single bibliographic record - does anybody know of such an instance? Doing individual sheets is time consuming, but trying to put all the sheet details on a single record would make for a very long record (possibly too long for the limits set by some cataloguing systems). Graphic indexes are good, but unless you can scan them and attach them to the record, they are only available on-site. I hope this is of some use.
