Cataloguing Librarian Bibliographic Control Services Division Queen Elizabeth II Library The person we want to hire: Memorial University is seeking a creative and knowledgeable cataloguer to share in shaping the future of resource discovery and access-an individual well grounded in existing standards and best practice, as well as excited by an expanding metadata world and by the evolving sphere of academic libraries. The successful candidate will have a degree from an ALA accredited graduate program. He/she will have effective interpersonal and writing skills, excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, will learn quickly and continuously, and will excel both independently and collaboratively. Since our future will be defined by emerging technologies, familiarity with the current state of information technology and a commitment to keep abreast of change are also needed, along with a zest for exploring alternative and complementary modes of access to resources. Cataloguing experience in an academic or research library environment, using standards such as AACR2, MARC, LCC, and LCSH, is required. Substantial experience in creating authority records and with an online authority system is highly desirable, as is knowledge of a second language, preferably Western European. What your responsibilities will be: As one of a collegial group of librarians in the Bibliographic Control Services Division, the successful candidate will perform original cataloguing in a range of formats and subject areas, will create records for NACO (Name Authority Cooperative Project), and may participate in non-MARC metadata projects. Cataloguing standards include Library of Congress classification and subject headings; National Library of Medicine classification and MESH subject headings; AACR2 and Library of Congress Rule Interpretations; Dublin Core; and MARC Bibliographic and Authority formats. Materials for original cataloguing range broadly, including electronic resources, government documents, technical reports, scores and sound recordings, audio-visual materials, maps, rare books, academic theses, and other published and unpublished resources. Works catalogued may be for specialized collections such as marine studies, or medicine and health, or may be unique titles for a comprehensive collection relating to Newfoundland and Labrador. The cataloguing librarians collaborate in establishing policies, priorities, and procedures, and in teaching coworkers; all may initiate and lead special projects. In addition, the successful candidate may have an opportunity to participate in collection development activities.
