-------- Original Message -------- Subject: SILS Bulletin 07-12 Geologic & Mineral Resource Map of Afghanistan Date: Thu, 20 Dec 2007 12:00:37 -0700 From: Sheryle J Jackson <[log in to unmask]> *SILS Information Bulletin * *Number: 07-12 Geologic and Mineral Resource Map of Afghanistan * * Open File Report 2006-1038* *Date: December 20, 2007* *Stock #: 207907 (folded) or 207908 (flat)* *Price: $7.00 plus, $5.00 handling per order* The U.S. Geological Survey offices in Reston, VA, Denver, CO, Menlo Park, CA and Tucson, AZ, along with the Afghan Geological Survey in Kabul, Afghanistan have produced a 1:850,000 scale geologic and mineral resource map of Afghanistan The geologic and mineral resource information for this map is derived from digitization of the original data from Abdullah and Chmyrlov (1977). The U.S. Geological Survey made no attempt to modify original map-unit boundaries and faults, however, modifications to map-unit symbology and map-unit descriptions were made to clarify the lithostratigraphy and to modernize the terminology. The classification of mineral deposit types is based on the authors’ interpretation of existing information and on limited field investigations by the authors. Some of the information came from published USGS deposit model classifications. New petroleum localities are based on research of archival data from Abdullah and Chmyrlov (1977). The shaded-relief base is derived from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) digital elevation model (DEM) data having 85-meter resolution. The international boundary as shown on this map was acquired from the Afghanistan Information Management Service (AIMS) web site: */_http://www.aims.org.af_ /* in September 2005. Province boundaries, province capital locations, and political names were also acquired from the AIMS web site. The AIMS data were originally derived from maps produced by the Afghanistan Geodesy and Cartography Head Office (AGCHO). This map measures approximately 76”by 54” and is available in two versions from: */_http://pubs.er.usgs.gov/usgspubs/ofr/ofr20061038_/*. Free download information is offered at this site. Version 2 differs from Version 1 in that (1) map units are colored according to the color scheme of the Commission for the Geological Map of the World (CGMW) (http://www.ccgm.org), (2) the minerals database has been updated, and (3) all data presented on the map are also available in GIS format.
