-------- Original Message -------- Subject: Taiwan maps Date: Wed, 2 Jan 2008 06:39:18 +0000 From: Brendan Whyte <[log in to unmask]> To: <[log in to unmask]> Some maps/mapping of Taiwan of interest to libraries: SMC Publishing reproduces a number of old maps of Taiwan: old European cartography (Ortelius, Blaeu...) and maps from the Japanese era including own plans and birds eye views of cities/provinces or the whole island. A catalogue (in Chinese, but also listing, in English, English-language books on Taiwan) is available on request. SMC Publishing 14, Alley 4, Lane 283, Roosevelt Rd, Sec. 3 Taipei 106 Taiwan ph 886-2-23620190 fax 886-2-23623834 www.smcbook.com.tw email [log in to unmask] ********************** SMC also publishes "Atlas of the Development of Taiwan cities, 1895-1945", in 2 volumes in a slipcase 46x64x8.5 cm, a total weight of 20kg(!!) for NT$24000 retail. 74 cities and towns are represented by 1 to 10 maps each, reproduced in colour from Japanese-era town planning archives in Taiwan Historica (formerly the Historical Research Commission of Taiwan Province) and also from several private collections. The maps show Japanese plans to 'modernise' the ancient towns, rebuilding them along grid patterns, improving drainage, and other infrastructure. A fold-out brochure is available on request, in Chinese, but with English summary and thumbnail reproductions of all the maps included. ***************************** Note that the above website didn't work for me today...
