-------- Original Message -------- Subject: 19th century Europe (boundaries and area) Date: Tue, 19 Feb 2008 15:39:04 -0500 From: Michael Fry <[log in to unmask]> Organization: University of Maryland Libraries To: Maps and Air Photo Systems Forum <[log in to unmask]> Hi, A patron of mine wants the area in sq. miles of western and southern European countries circa 1871 (i.e., "after German and Italian reunification"). Our 1905 edition of Lippincott's New Gazetteer has that info, and there are editions of that title from the 1870s in several local libraries. Theoretically, then, the patron could get her info from a few phone calls. But are old gazetteers the best source for that kind of info? And given the volatility of 19th century Europe, should any resource's info be taken with more or fewer grains of salt that any other? Thanks very much for any advice/counsel you can provide. mf -- Michael Fry Map Librarian Government Documents & Maps 4118 McKeldin Library University of Maryland College Park, MD 20742 301.314.1357 | [log in to unmask]
