I'm putting together a talk for this fall's NACIS conference on highly stylized maps. Examples that come to mind include various transit maps such as Washington Metro and Chicago (which I designed), or Vignelli's NYC subway map. Richard Saul Wurman's work in _Man- Made Philadelphia_ or his LA freeway diagram in _Access:LA_ come to mind. Airline route maps used to be examples, though lately they often are dominated by relief presentation. There are the new typographical maps outlining various neighborhoods of severaal large US cities from orkposters.com. Last year a roadgeek did a very diagrammatic map of the US Interstate System, and Nat Hedberg did an improved version that he has on his blog. I'm working on some maps of US cities for toddler "board books" that are extremely simplified, almost "mental maps" of landmarks in the various cities. Chicago's, for example, is organized around a stylized rapid transit network and has very simplified expressways. The Map Room and Strange Maps blogs are good places to poke around for examples.
