-------- Original Message -------- Subject: Re: Paper and Digital maps - consider size of original hardcopy object Date: Wed, 04 Mar 2009 10:45:56 -0800 From: Mary Larsgaard <[log in to unmask]> To: [log in to unmask] References: <[log in to unmask]> Until such time that persons have computer monitors that are 4' x 5' and may be moved from portrait to landscape, viewing maps that are more than about 21" x 18" remains a problem. Even though a user is looking at a relatively small area of a map - say, 5" x 5" - the entire map provides context for the user. Also, zooming in 8 times quickly loses its charm - especially when the original scan was not done at sufficiently high resolution to stand up to that sort of enlargement. On the other hand, we've found that scanned air photos - almost all of which are 9"x9" - are extremely popular with all of our users, even persons who don't feel very computer-ept.
