-------- Original Message -------- Subject: BLM--Surface Management Status and Minerals Management Status, Surface Managment Status series Date: Tue, 6 Oct 2009 18:42:12 -0400 From: Dennis Matthews <[log in to unmask]> To: [log in to unmask] CC: Dennis Matthews <[log in to unmask]> I'm not very familiar with map cataloging, so I have some questions. I just started working on a batch of maps from the Bureau of Land Management. These are the 1:100,000 scale Surface Management Status and Minerals Management Status, Surface Management Status. My first questions has to do with the authority record. Both of these series are cross-references for the heading United States. Bureau of Land Management. Surface-minerals management status (OCLC ARN 02365486). The first "series" Surface Management Status is issued under SuDoc. no. I 53.11/4: while the other is issued under I 53.11/4-2:. Since both "series" have differing numbers, wouldn't it have been better to create 2 SAR's for each series instead of cross references? My second questions deals with numbering. I've noticed in some instances that after the stem and numbering for the map (e.g. I 53.11/4:34107-), some use and "E" while others use an "A". For example, Colorado, Del Norte (OCLC nos. 64448458/64448446) use I 53.11/4:37106-E 1-TM-100/2005 & I 53.11/4-2:37106-E 1-TM-100/2005 while New Mexico, Magdalna (OCLC nos. 62333056/62211565) use I 53.11/4:34107-A 1-TM-100/2005 and I 53.11/4-2:34107-A 1-TM-100/2005. The New Mexico maps use a "A" while Colorado a "E". Is the "A" a typo or is there something specific to the map where "A", or "E" for that fact, should distinguish it? Many thanks, Dennis
