Accountabilities of the Position This position reports to the Head of the Murray Library Branch Librarians, as faculty, are assigned duties aligned with the practice of professional skills in the Library Standards for Promotion and Tenure (2003, as amended). Duties may cover the development of the collections, organizing collections, teaching information research skills, information services, information technology, administration, and research/scholarly work. This assignment will assume responsibilities for Geographic Information Systems (GIS). This is a newly created term position designed to establish an appropriate framework for library support of GIS on campus. As such, the successful candidate will engage in outreach, promotion, and collaboration with GIS users across campus and with librarian and IT colleagues in order to provide recommendations, advice and plans for future directions of GIS Library Services. In this capacity the incumbent will be responsible for the development and delivery of GIS services and geospatial data collections and will provide related backup support for other data services activities and/or identified strategic priorities. Practice of Professional Skills The University of Saskatchewan Library follows the liaison librarian model, which includes reference, instruction, and collections responsibilities to support on-site and distributed teaching, learning, and research. Under this structure the GIS Librarian will be responsible for the following: • Development of the Collections Manage, promote, and develop the Library’s GIS data collections. • Information Services Provide in-depth reference and information services for students, faculty, and researchers on the use of GIS and geospatial data to support research and teaching activities. This includes internal training & orientations for Library employees. • Teaching Information Research Skills Develop an information literacy program to provide group and individual research instruction in the use of GIS software and retrieval of GIS data and resources. Create training materials in print, web-based, and interactive formats using e-technologies where appropriate. • Research and Scholarship While not a requirement of this appointment, research and scholarship is recognized as practice of professional skills and may be pursued as an outcome related to the work of this position. Administration and Public Service Administration, public service, and outreach are also assigned duties within the Library Standards for Promotion and Tenure. These include active participation in collegial Library and University committees as position/rank allows as well as in academic or professional organizations. Qualifications, Experience and Competencies A Master of Library Science or equivalent degree from a university/institution recognized by the University of Saskatchewan is required. An undergraduate degree in a related subject area such as Geography or Environmental Science is preferred but not required. Additional GIS experience or educational course work related to Geographic Information Systems and/or previous academic library experience would be an asset. Candidates should also possess: An interest in pursuing a career in academic librarianship. Broad knowledge and understanding of current and emerging trends in library information technologies, including those related to GIS Experience and/or demonstrated knowledge in the use of GIS and geospatial data as well as trends in reference and research services, and the delivery of library and information services in the educational environment Broad knowledge of data acquisition and data discovery resources, tools, and techniques Strong analytical, organizational, and customer service skills A commitment to continuing development of professional knowledge and skills Excellent listening, oral, and written communication skills Ability to lead and motivate people Candidates must be able to: Perform basic spatial and geo-processing activities Demonstrate knowledge of key GIS resources for data and software support Demonstrate ability to troubleshoot software and hardware issues related to GIS Demonstrate their ability to effectively liaise and engage in collaborations in order to identify current and potential internal and external GIS users and partners. Librarians and Archivists are members of the University of Saskatchewan Faculty Association. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Discussions have begun for Phase 3 of the library transformation project that will see additional expansion and integrated services within the Murray Library building and planning is currently underway for an Academic Health Sciences Library as part of a new Academic Health Sciences Complex, with 2013 as the anticipated completion date for the Library.
