I have sometimes wrestled in my mind about using locators in catalog records for maps. I have to admit, that GNIS data in an 856 field is not something that occurred to me, although I am already aware that GNIS does name the quadrangle for places. I need to think about it some more. GNIS is a name server, while each quadrangle shows lots of names (except all those West of... and East of... sheets in the Arizona desert, that have no names on them at all!*). Someone cleverer than me could probably come up with a way to do this. * A student who used to work for me wondered if he would ever see an East of East of... or West of North of... variation.
