-------- Original Message -------- Subject: Guidance needed re Map Library staffing Date: Wed, 12 May 2010 09:41:36 -0500 From: Harry Davis <[log in to unmask]> To: Maps, Air Photo, GIS Forum - Map Librarianship <[log in to unmask]> Issues connected to a GIS staff retirement and to budget constraints are prompting questions at my library about how to staff a “Geospatial Resources” unit that incorporates traditional paper map library resources and services with GIS resources and services. It would be helpful for us to know prevailing practice and trends in professional and paraprofessional staffing for such services I may be missing an obvious source for such info (apologies, if so), but can someone direct me to data for: 1. Libraries with a map librarian only 2. Libraries with a GIS librarian only 3. Libraries with one person acting as a combined map and GIS librarian 4. Libraries with two librarians, one for maps and one for GIS 5. Libraries with a map or GIS librarian who has shared responsibilities with another library area (govdocs, business, numeric data, science, a specific subject area… etc.) 6. Libraries where the “map person” is a professional librarian, but the “GIS person” is not – or /vice versa/. Failing any collective data source, please feel free to respond to MAPS-L or e-mail me directly to indicate the situation at your library –or what you see as a preference or as a trend.
