They are basically metal bars about 4-5 mm diameter and "chrome" plated. They are bent in a squared U-shape. The ends of the of the bars have little "ears" of about 7-8 mm long each that are flattened and attached by screws to the back of the shelving. For wooden shelves the ears are not flattened and fit into holes towards the inside top of each shelf space. Both kinds are easy to lift and then pull a book out but they hold the books in the shelves when life gets shakey.
