The successful candidate will be a proven leader and demonstrate an active interest in scientific inquiry, research methods and information technology as it relates to the scientific disciplines. The incumbent will provide leadership within the evolving scholarly information environment by shaping services to enhance learning, collaboration, open-access publishing and the management of research data. The Head, Science Libraries will also play a critical role in the major planning and fund-raising effort to renovate and expand the Science Library on campus. The UO Libraries are committed to improving user experiences, and the Head, Science Libraries will directly, and via staff, help meet research and instruction needs of students and faculty in biology, chemistry, computer and information science, environmental science, environmental studies, geological science, human physiology, marine biology, mathematics and physics. The successful candidate will support and enhance a diverse learning and working environment. Duties and Responsibilities: The department head will oversee and coordinate the operations of three libraries: the main Science Library, the Mathematics Library, and the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology Library. This position is responsible for leading Science Libraries staff (four librarians, one manager, two staff, and 5FTE student workers), for guiding reference and access service needs within the Science Libraries, and serving as a subject specialist liaison to academic departments within the science disciplines. The person in this position will be expected to articulate a clear vision for the department and implement best practices. With the transition to electronic resources nearly complete, a major responsibility will include consolidating print resources and the redesign of space. Other duties and projects may be assigned. Qualifications: Required: ALA-accredited master's degree; proven skill in providing science information services; successful experience managing, leading and communicating with staff at all levels; demonstrated ability to manage multiple responsibilities in a dynamic and changing environment; demonstrated experience managing projects; and excellent oral and written communication skills. Desired: Three-to-five years progressively responsible experience as a manager; and demonstrated record of achievement in national professional associations.
