Aloha all:

Geographic names change over time for a variety of reasons. Political
boundaries change: e.g. German to Polish after WWII in Prussia. The way
non-Roman alphabets are translated: e.g. Wade-Giles to Pinyin in China.
Most BGN gazetteers were generated from the AMS map series many
libraries have and are therefore basically the indexes to those maps.
Again, if your library serves genealogists or historians, or have those
AMS map sets, these are all good reasons not to toss those gazetteers.
