Mr. <[log in to unmask]> To: Maps, Air Photo, GIS Forum - Map Librarianship <[log in to unmask]> An additional note I would add to Michael Fry's excellent advice, is that the quality of the steel of the case drawers is a factor, as well. Older cases, from companies such as Stacor, are a sturdy gauge of steel that can take quite a large amount weight. Newer cases from various brands (I think all made by the same maker) are of lighter steel, and with (my term) cheesier bearings, will not take as much weight. The bearings make all the difference in how well the drawers work, and in how many maps you can fit into a drawer. Then there is the issue below, of how much use the maps in any given drawer are to get, and ease of retrieval for that desirable map at the bottom of the drawer. I guess the answer to the question: How many maps will fit in a drawer? is, It depends! Which is another way of saying that I compiled this info a few years ago, did a big shift, and now don't remember any of it. ;) But, it really depends. Are the maps uniform in size (e.g., 7.5-minutes maps), or variable? Are they mounted or encapsulated? Divided into folders? Weight is a big concern for map case/drawer integrity (not to mention building integrity)--overfilled drawers can warp/bend over time and be difficult to pull in/out. Likewise, overfilled drawers make access and shelving very cumbersome, which likely means more damage to the maps as users and staff get frustrated, try to take shortcuts, tear things, shove 'em in and walk away, etc. Heavily used collections will need to be really easy to access; less-used collections can maybe afford to be less friendly, but not much less unless they're accessed only by trained, conscientious, and physically strong staff. But check the literature. Guidelines, if not rules or formulas, are out there. mf -- Michael Fry Senior Map Librarian National Geographic Society 1145 17th St. N.W. We are in the planning stages on how to reconfigure our Maps Library. Some of our map case drawers are overflowing and what we need to figure out is the optimum number of maps per drawer. Has anyone come up with a formula? Any help you can give me would be most appreciated. ------------------------------__------------------------------__----------- ,-~~-.___. / | ' \ "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of ( ) 0 the few or the one." \_/-, ,----' ==== // Mr. Spock / \-'~; /~~~(O) Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan / __/~| / | =( _____| (_________| Carlos A.
