Angie,

I have used LandScan data since 2000 to extract population data using
GIS software. The data was very useful in getting population estimate
data of countries which is difficult to get. I used to get this dataset
free of cost by signing an agreement paper till last year. However, this
year it seems policy had changed and we have purchase it through East
View Company.

Another possible global population dataset free of cost is from CIESIN
called GPW and GRUMP. You can download them from this site
http://sedac.ciesin.columbia.edu/gpw/

Thanks,
-Wangyal
