-------- Original Message -------- Subject: RE: Topos available from WWU Date: Mon, 3 Oct 2011 19:28:27 +0000 From: Hallie Pritchett <[log in to unmask]> To: Maps, Air Photo, GIS Forum - Map Librarianship <[log in to unmask]> Rob (and everyone else) - I will be doing a session at this month's Depository Library Council meeting & conference entitled "Care and Feeding of Maps - Tips for Managing Your Depository Map Collection" on Wednesday, October 19th at 9:15AM. I'll be offering advice on how to arrange, house and maintain paper maps and providing an overview of resources for managing map collections of all shapes and sizes. If you won't be attending DLC I'll be happy to forward my slides & handout. As far as your USGS topos go, as others have suggested you might consider keeping the latest edition of the states you plan to keep rather than the last 5 years since a number of topos haven't been updated in over 5 years. Also, if you have room you might consider keeping all editions of your state. Even though USGS is in the process of scanning all editions of all of their maps & making them available online there will still be demand for paper maps from your collection. Best of luck with your project! I will take all that I can. Brief version of the story: When Janet Collins, the map librarian, retired, Huxley College decided not to replace her (this was exactly when the economy went kerflooey). Western Libraries took over responsibility for the Map Library but we had no staff to keep it open either so it was moved from one end of campus (where Huxley is) to the main library where we could handle it more easily. This required reducing the collection and the eastern state topos were, by agreement with the stakeholders, the easiest to let go of. I am now in the process of reducing the number of remaining map drawers by one third (over the next year) so that microforms can be fit into the space as well. So we are suffering a major cutback. If you are interested, here is our new location. http://libguides.wwu.edu/mapcollection Rob Rob Lopresti Map Librarian, Liaison for Huxley College and Government Information Librarian Western Washington University 360-650-3342 [log in to unmask] -----Original Message----- From: Maps, Air Photo, GIS Forum - Map Librarianship [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Angie Cope, American Geographical Society Library, UW Milwaukee Sent: Thursday, September 29, 2011 12:45 PM To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Re: Topos available from WWU -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Re: Topos available from WWU Date: Thu, 29 Sep 2011 15:12:27 -0400 From: Michael Fry <[log in to unmask]> To: Maps, Air Photo, GIS Forum - Map Librarianship <[log in to unmask]> Hi Rob, I don't know what your real mission is, but take care. Very few (no?) USGS 1:24000 maps have been printed/distributed in the last five years (except perhaps those jointly produced with the USFS, which cover a small fraction of the US). Many USGS 1:24000s (e.g., Washington, DC) hadn't been updated in nearly 30 years--the most recent print editions are well over 5 years old. So if your goal is simply to keep only the new, "current" print 1:24000s, you may be left with nothing but Forest Service editions...and a very skimpy print topo map collection with little or no coverage of some states. But maybe that's the goal. ? $.02. (And maybe less since I'm no longer in the FDLP pipeline.) HTH. mf -- Michael Fry Senior Map Librarian National Geographic Society 1145 17th St. N.W.
