Leventhal Map Center at the Boston Public Library The Norman B. Leventhal Map Center is a nonprofit organization located at the Boston Public Library in Copley Square. It was created in 2004 as a partnership between philanthropist Norman Leventhal and the Boston Public Library, and serves as the steward of the BPL's collection of 200,000 maps and 5,000 atlases dating from the 15th century to the present. The Leventhal Map Center presents changing exhibitions, collects, catalogs and conserves the collection and offers extensive education programs to school groups and teachers. The website, maps.bpl.org includes over 100 lesson plans and 3,600 digitized maps. JOB TITLE: Associate Cataloger JOB PURPOSE: Responsible for performing entry-to intermediate-level descriptive and subject cataloging for review, including basic original cataloging and classification, which may require special language and / or subject knowledge. REPORTS TO: Senior Cartographic Cataloger and Curator of Maps. TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Performs one or all phases of descriptive and subject cataloging, including basic original cataloging and classification which may require special language or subject knowledge. 2. Processes cartographic materials by creating or editing bibliographic records in the appropriate MARC format. 3. Maintains a consistent output of cataloging, copy- cataloging, classification and database maintenance according departmental standards. 4. Accurately catalogs titles at various bibliographic levels including minimal, core, and full level standards as directed. 5. Processes cartographic materials according to designated priorities. 6. Edits and enhances MARC records for use as metadata on Map Center's website. 7. Performs other related and comparable duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS (REQUIRED): - Master's Degree from an ALA-accredited library science program. - 2 years minimum of professional library experience in descriptive and subject cataloging. - Sound knowledge of AACR2, Library of Congress rule interpretations, Library of Congress subject analysis. - Working familiarity with OCLC. - Experience cataloging in an integrated library system, particularly SirsiDynix's Horizon is preferred. - Knowledge of current trends and best practices in cataloging and metadata services, such as RDA. - Strong analytical and problem solving skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills. - Proficient computer skills, including experience with personal computer hardware and software as needed to perform library functions. - Excellent organizational skills, accuracy, and attention to detail. - Demonstrated ability to work well independently and with others in a rapidly changing and demanding environment. QUALIFICATIONS (PREFERRED): - Reading knowledge of one or more European languages. - Subject background in History, Geography or the Social Sciences. - One year experience working with maps (modern and/or rare) or special format (non-book) materials. - Knowledge of Library of Congress Map Cataloging Manual, and MARC formats for maps, books, and rare materials. - Experience with georeferencing maps.
