Mr. <[log in to unmask]> To: Maps, Air Photo, GIS Forum - Map Librarianship <[log in to unmask]> As a cataloger, I really see no challenge at all. It is like with description of anything else. If someone is named as a creator, they are designated an author. If someone is named as an editor, they are designated as an "added author". In the map world, corporate entities are usually the creators, or have co-creatorship when names of individuals are given. In the case of Seeger or GM Johnson as a co-creator with the publisher, both are given as authoring entities. Where GM Johnson is named without other entities, then that is easy-peasy. I see this sort of thing coming up when I field queries about citation. "What do I do if there is no author?" List it by date and title of the work. "What do I do if there is more than one author?" List it by authors' names in the order they are named in the work. Same for a map. If there is more than one entity named, the one named most prominently gets primary responsibility, while the other(s) get added author entries. The artwork he "got back" was probably his to begin with. This is yet another wrinkle for you cataloguers. How to deal with companies like Seeger and Johnson who both publish under their own label and under other publishers' labels while consistently maintaining their own copyright. It is a tangled web we weave... Nat Case Hedberg Maps http://www.hedbergmaps.com (don't forget us!)
