USGS and we are working on a joint inventory project and this is referred to as "woodland tint". You are also correct that it is often the only difference between two sheets; all other metadata will be the same. Our project is creating a database of metadata for the USGS historic quads, and many of the USGS maps are up in the National Map (http://nationalmap.gov/historical/). There is a lot of good information in the FAQ there. Please feel free to contact me if you have more questions. The Library of Congress currently has no plans to do sheet level cataloging on the USGS quad maps, but we are working on a complete inventory of our holdings. Colleen Colleen R. Some USGS topos have a green layer (presumably indicating forest cover?) -- often this green plate is the only feature different from an identical map (same dates, etc.). I was wondering if anyone has noted this "green plate" in cataloging individual sheets, and if so, which field and what language you used to describe it. Thanks in advance! -Susan Susan Powell GIS Specialist for Metadata Yale University Library
