This is all run through the School of Earth Sciences Shared Field Measurement Facility. They will check them out to any Stanford affiliate. See here: https://pangea.stanford.edu/academics/field-programs/shared-field-measurement-facility . Patricia did check out about 50 Ipads (borrowed from Academic Computing) for her class the other day to do data collection around campus for an exercise. It will take a few tries with this to get all of the pieces right, but it turned out well. We are also looking at purchasing some handheld phones/small tablets with no data plans to use for data collection exercises and training. Once we get things set, I'll send another note about what we're doing and share any findings/instructions/etc. Best, Julie *** Julie Sweetkind-Singer Assistant Director of Geospatial, Cartographic and Scientific Data & Services Head Librarian, Branner Earth Sciences Library & Map Collections Stanford University 397 Panama Mall; MC 2211 Stanford, CA 94305 (650)725-1102 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *From: *"Angie Cope, American Geographical Society Library, UW Milwaukee" <[log in to unmask]> *To: *[log in to unmask] *Sent: *Friday, November 2, 2012 7:09:14 AM *Subject: *Re: Loaning GPS units -------- Original Message -------- Subject: RE: Loaning GPS units Date: Thu, 1 Nov 2012 21:40:25 +0000 From: Hughes, Tracey <[log in to unmask]> To: Maps, Air Photo, GIS Forum - Map Librarianship <[log in to unmask]> Our library loans GPS units out mostly just to faculty, but we will also do it for students if they ask for it. We have 8 Garmin Oregon GPS units - definitely recreational grade units but are enough so they can be functional in the field and get people familiar with GPS units. The check out on them is dependent on what they are using the unit for i.e. if they are in the field for a week, we'll check them out for a week or if they need them for a night we check them out for a night. : ) Sincerely, Tracey Hughes, MSI, AICP, GISP CMC Alpine Campus Library [log in to unmask] http://library.coloradomtn.edu (970) 870-4451 Chair, American Library Association, Map & Geospatial Information Round Table (MAGIRT) http://www.ala.org/magirt -----Original Message----- From: Maps, Air Photo, GIS Forum - Map Librarianship [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Angie Cope, American Geographical Society Library, UW Milwaukee Sent: Thursday, November 01, 2012 3:29 PM To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Re: Loaning GPS units -------- Original Message -------- Subject: RE: Loaning GPS units Date: Thu, 1 Nov 2012 20:25:57 +0000 From: Kate Dougherty <[log in to unmask]> To: Maps, Air Photo, GIS Forum - Map Librarianship <[log in to unmask]> Our library doesn't currently loan out GPS units, but I would be interested in a summary of responses. Does anybody have a similar program and loan out GPS units, and if so can you share the specs of what you use or do you have suggestions on the most appropriate sort of units for this purpose? I'd be happy to compile responses and send out a summary if people are interested.
