Leventhal Map Center Boston Public Library 700 Boylston Street Boston, MA 02116 http://maps.bpl.org *Director of Education & Public Programs -- Full-Time* The Director of Education and Public Programs is responsible for developing and directing a full range of accessible and intellectually challenging programs - onsite, offsite and online - for teachers, K-12 students, learners of all ages and the general public. Major Responsibilities . Demonstrates leadership in developing new and innovative strategies using the historic map collection to serve the K-12 population of teachers and students, and the general public . In collaboration with staff develops a comprehensive education program in keeping with the LMC Strategic Plan and BPL Compass Principles . Administers grants that support educational and outreach programs, and with development staff assists with grant preparation. . Develops a comprehensive Teachers Center that provides resources for teachers . Oversees and delivers programs to teachers including workshops and institutes, helping educators improve the teaching of multiple subject areas using the map collection. . Develops and implements an ongoing series of public programs to promote interest and enjoyment of maps, and the resources of the LMC . Develops and implements measures for broadening audiences . Develops partnerships with Boston Public Schools and other institutions . Develops education curricula aligned with state and national standards to accompany online resources in collaboration with LMC staff and the Teachers Advisory Committee . Works collaboratively with LMC and BPL staff to develop programs and interpretive exhibition materials for the general public, k-12 students and teachers. . Develops and oversees a teacher fellowship program . Oversees evaluation of all educational programs . Requires attendance at evening and weekend events. Qualifications Education: . Master's degree in Education or Museum Studies or equivalent . Master's or Ph.D. in American History, Public History, Geography or other preferred Experience . Minimum 7 years of experience in one or more of the following areas: professional and classroom education with urban populations and educational programming, . Demonstrated appreciation of maps and atlases as an educational resource . Demonstrated success in: professional development, program delivery, curriculum writing . Collaborative program development . Event planning and execution Skills . Excellent oral and written communications skills . Strong leadership skills . High level of creativity, including facility for and willingness to engage in brainstorming . Superb analytical skills, as applied to both historical and geographical content and process . Understanding of historical methodology and ability to construct relevant narratives . Well-developed understanding of challenges faced by public and private school educators and their students; key issues and considerations in reaching this audience . High level of energy, with ability to motivate peers, program participants, and potential funders . Strong project management skills, including ability to prioritize in a complex environment . Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively inside an organization and build long-term relationships with external constituencies . Flexibility . Long-range planning skills coupled with ability to adapt to changing economic circumstances and audience needs . Proficiency with Microsoft Office products and knowledge of new technologies Reporting Relationships: This position reports to the Executive Director. Supervisory Responsibility Manages teacher research fellows, interns and consultants.
