-------- Original Message -------- Subject: Interesting Map Scale Date: Wed, 17 Apr 2013 08:50:13 -0700 From: Carlos Diaz <[log in to unmask]> To: DOCTECH-L <[log in to unmask]>, [log in to unmask] While processing a map, I found that it had the unusual series of 26 x 25 minute and it was associated with the 1:62,500 scale which is usually associated with the 15 minute series. So, I sent an email to the USGS to find out what was going on. Here is their response: *"You are correct that the 1:62,500 (scale) usually refers to 15 minutes (series). Occasionally maps were prepared and printed with a slightly different geographic area (non-standard size) to allow the map to extend to a State border or include a geographic feature (island, peninsula, lake, etc.) to make the map more useful to the reader.* *Hope this helps.* * * *U.S. Geological Survey * *Science Information Services* *Office of Communications and Publishing* *12201 Sunrise Valley Drive, MS 507* *Reston, VA 20192* *888-ASK-USGS* *Cynthia Manuel"* ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ,-~~-.___. / | ' \ "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of ( ) 0 the few or the one." \_/-, ,----' ==== // Mr. Spock / \-'~; /~~~(O) Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan / __/~| / | =( _____| (_________| Carlos A.
