-------- Original Message -------- Subject: Map Librarians Turn RDA on its Ear! Date: Wed, 12 Jun 2013 20:50:51 +0000 From: Weessies, Kathleen <[log in to unmask]> To: [log in to unmask] <[log in to unmask]> Map records in library catalogs have some unique qualities not seen in records for books and other more mainstream library items. Paige Andrew of Pennsylvania State University should know, as he is currently co-authoring a manual on the subject. “Now that we’ve been living with RDA for some time, book catalogers have had a chance to iron out many issues, and now the library world is ready to tackle the really unique collections such as maps,” says Paige. Susan Moore, a prominent map cataloging trainer based at the University of Northern Iowa agrees. “The RDA approach to cataloging is all about patrons’ needs in a more interconnected information environment.” She adds, "The important thing for catalogers is to keep calm and continue cataloging." Paige and Susan will have more to share at the upcoming MAGIRT Program at the ALA Annual Conference. "Maps the RDA Way: Come Catalog a Map with Us!" which will be held Saturday, June 29th, 1:00 to 2:30 PM at the InterContinental Chicago hotel, 505 N. Michigan Avenue, in room Seville-East. Participants will receive a free National Geographic Costa Rica Adventure Map and a color copy of a CIA map. Attendees will be guided through the more critical portions of the descriptive process using RDA, and will leave having worked together on two maps! This program is sponsored by the Map and Geospatial Information Round Table (MAGIRT), is co-sponsored by the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS), and received generous support from EastView Geospatial, ESRI, Geographic Research, and TRF PolicyMap.
