This was an interesting article in yesterday's _NY Times_:
They link to a recently developed interactive map tool:
Although in its early stages, the tool has gotten a good bit of praise.
There are plans to update the tool yearly with data from NASA's Landstat
8 satellite.

That NY Times discussion refers back to the original article just
appearing in Science, "High-Resolution Global Maps of 21st-Century
Forest Cover Change": <http://www.sciencemag.org/content/342/6160/850>.
